Overview

SAM (Smart Audio MusicHub) is the new home for the SmartKaraoke project: a self-hosted music and karaoke hub for organizing playlists, building a persistent queue, finding songs through YouTube, and controlling playback from phones, desktops, and Android TV.

The product combines a Flask web application, a Raspberry Pi-based audio appliance, network-hosted media, and external playback devices into one dependable local experience.

SmartKaraoke capabilities

  • Search YouTube and add karaoke tracks to a shared queue.
  • Manage playlists and invite guests from a browser.
  • Control playback and receiver state from a mobile-first interface.
  • Coordinate Android TV playback while keeping queue ownership in the application.
  • Use MPD, Bluetooth, and the Linux audio stack for local music playback.
  • Return clear unavailable states when a device or service cannot be reached.

Architecture

The application provides focused control boundaries around queue management, YouTube playback, Android TV, MPD, and Bluetooth. The application owns playlist and queue state; receiver adapters own device-specific playback; MPD and the Linux audio stack own local audio playback; and system services own boot ordering and recovery.

The current architecture uses Docker and Flask for the web application, Android TV receiver integration for karaoke playback, NFS for the music library, MPD for local playback, PipeWire and WirePlumber for audio routing, and BlueZ for Bluetooth connections.

Real SAM screenshots are not yet available in the portfolio workspace. The hero image on this page is an illustrative visual created for the portfolio redesign and should not be read as a production screen capture.

Current status

The application and service boundaries are in place. Full on-device production hardening and recovery verification remain future work.
